Campaign News

Letter from Treasurer-Elect Cary Kennedy

Yesterday evening I received a call from Mark Hillman, graciously conceding the election.

We did it!

This was a campaign about protecting the priorities of the people of Colorado; about making sure our government is open, transparent and accountable, and about making sure education is Colorado's first and top priority. But this election was not about me. It was about you. From the start you supported and encouraged and worked for this victory. You know what it takes to win and friends--you have done it. I owe many thanks, more than I can express here.

To my opponent Mark Hillman thank you for your service to the people of Colorado and for the dedication and hard work you gave to your campaign.

Next, to my family: my parents, my siblings, my mother-in-law and my children who made every day of this campaign a joy; and to my husband Saurabh who earns the MVP award. No one worked harder to win this election - thank you!

I want to extend thanks to my brilliant campaign team. This campaign started with one close friend working in my basement and quickly grew to include many, many volunteers, some who gave weeks and months to this campaign, thank you to you all! Thank you to Gail Schoettler for her leadership and vision for me and for women candidates everywhere.

And finally to the next Governor and Lt. Governor of Colorado who I will be so proud to serve with, Bill Ritter and Barbara O'Brien. CONGRATULATIONS!

Kennedy for Colorado State Treasurer

On January 5, 2006, Cary Kennedy announced her candidacy for Colorado State Treasurer, vowing to protect taxpayers' money and give voters more information about where their tax dollars are invested and spent. Kennedy, 37, enters the Treasurer's race with 10 years of experience in Colorado finance and a proven track record of leadership -- a record which reflects her firm commitment to finding fiscal solutions that balance the budget without cutting wise investments in Colorado's children and public schools.

"My first priority as treasurer will be to make sure state funds are invested, managed and spent wisely and that we give taxpayers more information about how their money is being used," said Kennedy.

Kennedy recently served as the policy director for House Speaker Andrew Romanoff where she helped develop Referendum C. In 2000, she was the author of a statewide initiative to increase funding for Colorado's public schools, Amendment 23. She also worked in Governor Romer's administration as a budget officer in the Office of State Planning and Budgeting. Kennedy grew up in Colorado and has a master's degree in public administration from Columbia University and a law degree from the University Of Denver College Of Law.

A Record of Leadership

The benefits of Cary Kennedy's passion, hard work and creativity are felt every day by Coloradans throughout the state:

.       Cary organized and led a broad, bi-partisan coalition to increase funding for Colorado's public schools. As a driving force behind the creation and passage of Amendment 23 in 2000, Cary helped Colorado reverse a decade-long decline in public education funding.

.       Cary helped develop a statewide initiative approved by Colorado voters to increase Colorado's tobacco tax in order to expand Colorado's investment in children's health care and cancer research.

.       Cary proposed and helped develop an adjustment to the budget to reflect growth in population (called the "growth dividend"), which Governor Owens signed into law in 2002. The adjustment helped the state to balance the budget in 2004 and 2005.

.       As policy director for House Speaker Andrew Romanoff, Cary helped legislative leaders build the bi-partisan budget proposal Referendum C, and give taxpayers a first-ever annual report outlining how their tax dollars are spent.

The Colorado Treasury

As Treasurer, Cary Kennedy will protect taxpayers' money and serve the long-term economic interest of the state. Cary will:

.       Provide prudent investment and management of state funds.

.       Insist on new, higher standards of transparency and accountability, including making available a comprehensive yearly financial report for the State of Colorado that is easily readable and provides taxpayers with an overview of the state's finances.

.       Be an active and involved member of the PERA board and work to address the long term solvency of the state's pension system in a manner that is fair to both pensioners and taxpayers.

.       Be a strong steward of the state's school funds.

.       Promote accountability by insisting on the highest standards of ethical conduct and transparency.

"Cary has been a leader in Colorado for a decade.  We can count on her to be a good steward of public funds and to fight for the interests of Colorado's taxpayers."

U.S. Senator Ken Salazar

"Very few people in Colorado understand the state's finances as well as Cary Kennedy. I can think of no one better for the job of State Treasurer."

Andrew Romanoff, Speaker, Colorado House of Representatives

"I have known and worked with Cary Kennedy for almost twenty years. She is a fair, honest and dedicated public servant and will be a powerful advocate for the people of Colorado."
